What to include in an Experian dispute letter
- Full name, current address, date of birth and Social Security number. Experian is strict about identity matching; include your previous address too if you've moved in the past two years.
- Your Experian report number if you have one. It's a long number at the top of a recent Experian report and gets the letter matched to your file immediately.
- For each item: the creditor name and account number as shown, what's wrong, and what's correct.
- Copies of a government photo ID and a current proof of address.
- Copies of any evidence.
- Signature and date.
The free letter templates follow this structure. The software fills them in from your actual Experian report and attaches your ID automatically.
How Experian investigates
Same mechanism as the other bureaus: your dispute is coded and sent to the furnisher through e-OSCAR, the furnisher responds, Experian updates and notifies you. Experian is known for closing investigations relatively quickly and for a higher share of disputes being processed largely automatically, which cuts both ways. Clear, specific errors with evidence tend to be corrected fast. Vague disputes get verified fast.
Experian's online Dispute Center is well built and shows status in real time, but it limits you to preset reasons and small uploads. For anything beyond a simple error, mail the letter and use the online account only to track it.
Reading your Experian result
- Deleted: gone from Experian. Confirm at TransUnion and Equifax separately.
- Updated: Experian's result letter shows the revised tradeline. Compare field by field.
- Remains: Experian's word for verified. Request the method of verification under FCRA §611(a)(7) and consider a direct furnisher dispute.
- "We were unable to process": usually an identity match problem. Resend with clearer ID copies and your report number.
Escalating with Experian
- Ask for the method of verificationCite FCRA §611(a)(7). Experian must respond within 15 days with the furnisher's name, address and phone and a description of how it verified.
- Dispute directly with the furnisherUnder FCRA §623(a)(8) the creditor must run its own investigation and correct every bureau it reports to.
- CFPB complaintconsumerfinance.gov/complaint. Experian answers CFPB complaints with a human review, and the response is on the record.
- Consumer attorneyFor a proven error Experian keeps verifying, an FCRA claim carries statutory damages and attorney's fees, so many attorneys take them on contingency.
Experian specifics worth knowing
- Experian shows a FICO 8 score in its free consumer product, which is closer to what card issuers use than the VantageScore other bureaus show.
- Experian Boost adds utility and streaming payments to your Experian file only. It doesn't affect TransUnion or Equifax and won't fix negative items.
- Experian is the most common bureau for credit card applications, so errors here often matter most for card approvals.

Experian, P.O. Box 4500, Allen, TX 75013. Send by certified mail with return receipt.
How long does Experian take?
30 days from receipt, up to 45 if you provide more information mid-investigation. Experian often finishes faster, sometimes in 10 to 20 days.
Does Experian charge to dispute?
No. Disputing is free by law at every bureau. You never need Experian's paid subscription products to file a dispute.
Why did Experian ask me to verify my identity by mail?
