The three bureaus

How to dispute with Equifax

Equifax is the bureau mortgage lenders and many auto lenders lean on, and the one with the most public-record and employment-adjacent data. It keeps its own file, so a fix at Experian or TransUnion doesn't carry over. Here's how to dispute with Equifax.

What to include in an Equifax dispute letter

Equifax also accepts a completed copy of its own dispute form, downloadable from its site, but a letter with the same information works and gives you room to explain.

How Equifax investigates

Equifax forwards your dispute to the furnisher via e-OSCAR with a reason code and any documents, the furnisher checks its records, and Equifax applies the result. Equifax has historically had the highest share of "verified" outcomes on first-round disputes among the three, so specificity and evidence matter even more here. A dispute that names the exact field and the exact discrepancy gets a real look.

Equifax's online portal is fine for tracking, but its reason codes are limited and it caps attachments. Mail the letter for anything with evidence.

Frequently asked questions

What is Equifax's dispute address?

Equifax Information Services LLC, P.O. Box 740256, Atlanta, GA 30374-0256. Certified mail with return receipt.

How long does Equifax take?

30 days from receipt, up to 45 if you add information mid-investigation. Equifax often runs closer to the full 30.

Is Equifax still offering free credit freezes after the 2017 breach?

Freezes are free at all three bureaus by federal law since 2018. Equifax also offers free 'Lock & Alert', a slightly different tool. A freeze is the stronger protection and doesn't interfere with disputes.

My Equifax report shows an account the others don't. Why?

Not every creditor reports to all three bureaus. Some report to one or two. If an account only appears at Equifax and it's wrong, you only need to dispute it at Equifax.
