Under FCRA §604, a company can only pull your credit report with a permissible purpose: you applied for credit, insurance or a rental, you gave written permission, or they have an existing account with you. An inquiry without one of those is unauthorized and can be removed. An inquiry with one of those cannot, no matter how many letters you send.
Which inquiries are disputable
- You never applied. A lender you've never heard of, for a product you never asked for. This can be a clerical error or the first sign of identity theft.
- You applied, but were told it would be a soft pull. Common with "pre-qualification" offers. If the lender promised a soft inquiry and did a hard one, dispute it with the lender directly.
- Duplicate inquiries for one application, from the same lender on the same day.
- Inquiries older than two years. They must drop off automatically. If one hasn't, dispute it.
- Someone else's inquiry on your file, from a mixed file with a person of similar name or SSN.
How to dispute an unauthorized inquiry
Inquiries are handled a little differently from accounts. The bureau can't easily "verify" an inquiry with the lender, so bureau disputes of inquiries are often answered with "the creditor has confirmed permissible purpose" without much investigation. Two approaches work better together.
- Write to the lender firstAsk them, in writing, to identify the permissible purpose for pulling your report on the date shown, and to provide a copy of the application or authorization. If they can't, ask them to instruct the bureaus to remove the inquiry. Lenders remove inquiries they can't justify, because an unauthorized pull is an FCRA violation with statutory damages.
- Dispute with each bureau showing itState that you did not apply for credit with this company on this date and that no permissible purpose exists. Use the hard inquiry removal letter. Attach the lender's response if you got one.
- If fraud is involved, use the FTC routeAn identity theft report from IdentityTheft.gov plus a written request to the bureau requires them to block the inquiry and any related accounts within four business days.
- Check after 30 daysInquiry disputes resolve faster than account disputes, usually within two to three weeks.
What doesn't work
Blanket letters disputing every inquiry on the report. The bureaus see thousands of these. They'll verify the legitimate ones, ignore the rest, and may treat future disputes from you with more suspicion. Only dispute what's actually unauthorized. If you're unsure whether you applied, check your email and the lender's site before writing.
Perspective on the score impact
Inquiries are the smallest factor in your score. A single unauthorized one costs a couple of points for a year. The reason to remove it is less the points and more what it signals: either sloppy lender practice or someone using your identity. Fix the inquiry, but spend your real effort on the collections, late payments and charge-offs that move your score by tens of points.
The software flags inquiries with no matching account, duplicate inquiries from one lender, and inquiries past two years. Scan your reports.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a hard inquiry hurt my score?
Usually fewer than five points each, and only for about 12 months. Several inquiries for the same type of loan within a short window (14 to 45 days depending on the model) are counted as one for mortgages, auto loans and student loans.
Can I remove hard inquiries I authorized?
No. If you applied for credit, the lender had a permissible purpose. Disputing authorized inquiries is a waste of a round and can flag your disputes as frivolous.
What's the difference between a hard and a soft inquiry?
A soft inquiry happens when you check your own credit, a lender pre-screens you, or an employer checks you with permission. Soft inquiries aren't visible to lenders and never affect your score. Only hard inquiries matter here.
A dealership ran my credit at ten lenders. Can I remove nine?
Usually not. When you authorize a dealer to shop your application, each lender they send it to has permissible purpose. Scoring models treat auto inquiries within a short window as one anyway.
